Indian Summer

After a summer full of rain something strange happens.
The calendar says it’s officially autumn but it is hot summer outside!
So time to take bring Ivan the Terrible out start cycling.
Target for today was De Kaag.

We took the route along the canal with the name Vliet
This canal was dug in 47 AD under command of Roman general Corbulo, who wished to connect river Rhine, of which the current Oude Rijn stream in Roman times was the main branch, to the Meuse. In the middle Ages the Vliet was an important trade link that attracted all kinds of trade, as it flowed through the heart of the County of Holland.

The Kagerplassen ( Dutch for "the Kaag Lakes") is a small lake system in South Holland located to the northeast of Leiden. The Kaag Lakes are a popular area for boating, watersports, fishing, camping and walking. Windmills, waterfront pasture land with grazing cows and sheeps and quaint Dutch boats.

The Kaag Lakes are connected to a larger network of lakes and waterways called the Holland Lakes (Hollandse Plassen). The other lake systems are called the Braassemermeer, Wijde Aa and the Westeinderplassen. They are all connected by the Haarlemmermeer Ring Waterway, the Does river and many smaller waterways. This network means that much of northern South Holland is enjoyable for boating.

There are five ferry’s active in the summer. Like this little footpassenger and cyclist ferry.

And it was a very busy day for the skipper.

Miss Micro adventure was recovering from a couple of day’s flu.

Or was it just enjoying the sun??

Gives me time to play with the camera.

On the way back we made this photos of the Vrouw Vennemolen.
The history of this wind mill dates back to the early 17th century, being mentioned on a map of 1618 as “Vennemolen”. In 1835 the mill has undergone a large restoration. In 1935 the mill was largely renewed. It was put out of duty in 1954. Since the restoration of 1996-1998 the mill is sometimes used again to pump out water of the Vennepolder again.

On the way back I made this photo's of the Knipmolen next to the Vliet near Voorschoten.

Cycling in the Netherlands

I get some curious questions about cycling in the Netherlands

Some answers.

Nearly 85 percent of the population own at least one bicycle. They use it regularly, often daily. There are about 16 million bicycles in Holland, slightly more than one for every inhabitant. I own only 4 bikes and the tandem.
About 1.3 million new bicycles are sold every year.

The Netherlands has got the best cycle lane network in the world. You can cycle on more than 19.000 kilometers of bicycles paths and lanes in and between every city and town.

The country offers easy cycling terrain. We build it very flat so it is suitable for any cyclist, only in the far south, there are some minor hills.

Young urban professionals tend to like purpose-built bikes – such as models designed to carry two or more children.

Others prefer the classic cart-bikes, which can be used to transport large pieces of furniture or the kids etc

So-called ‘grandma’ or ‘grandfather’ bikes are sought after by those with a sense of history. The German army stole many of Holland’s bikes during World War II, and even to-date the Dutch will half-jokingly tell German tourists that they want their bikes back.

"How to recognise a Dutch in New York"

Legally, bikes are allowed to turn right at a red light – if and when it is safe to do so. In reality, in many cities, cyclists feel invincible once they mount their bikes, and thus they won’t stop for anything. They’ll run red lights, weave through traffic.

Ferries operate across rivers are transporting bicycles.

Taking a bicycle on a ferry normally incurs a charge, but some ferries (such as those across the IJ, Amsterdam and the ferry over the Noordseacanal) carry bicycles for free.

I found some video about cycling in the Netherlands

And there are around 2700 police officers trained to patrol on bicycles.
And I am one of them.

Egmond - Scheveningen

After a relaxed night in Hotel Zuiderduin and a luxurious breakfast,
it was time to start cycling again.
First stop, the lighthouse.

The J.C.J. van Speijk Lighthouse was selected in 1834 as the national J.C.J van Speijkmonument, to honor the memory of the Dutch naval hero.

When the Belgian War of Independence broke out Van Speijk gained an appointment as commander of a gunboat.
Van Speijk despised the Belgian independence movement.
On February 5, 1831, a gale caused his boat to drift into the quay at the port of Antwerp. Belgians stormed the boat and demanded Van Speijk take the Dutch flag down. Rather than complying, he fired a pistol (some versions say he threw a lit cigar—few if any first-hand witnesses survived) into a barrel of gunpowder in the ships armory, legendary saying "Dan liever de lucht in", which translates as, "(I'd) rather be blown up then".

This time we past the Noordzee canal (that’s the canal between Amsterdam and the North Sea) by ferry. This ferry is free for cyclist. On this beautiful Sunday the ferry was full of cyclist and no cars.

“I’m the Queen of the world!” ( Fortunately for me, the ferry continued to float)

Ivan!

Checking the GPS.

Getting some fresh air

The Pug on a dune, south of Scheveningen.

The skyline of The Hague.

In the south, the new sandmotor is started to getting shape.

The Sand Motor is a huge volume of sand which will be applied this year at Ter Heijde. Big suction hopper dredgers will deposit the dredged sand from the sea on land via rainbowing or through a pipeline.

Influenced by wind and water the sand gradually spreads along the coast.
The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually
be fully incorporated in the dunes and the beach.

Rainbowing

So in the end of the year I have much more beach to explore!!

The Hague by snow..!

The grounds on which the Binnenhof now stands were purchased by Count Floris IV of Holland in 1229, where he built his mansion, next to the little lake that has been called Hofvijver or 'Court Pond' since the 13th century.

The Binnenhof (Dutch, literally "inner court"), is a complex of buildings in The Hague. It has been the location of meetings of the Staten-Generaal, the Dutch parliament, since 1446, and has been the centre of Dutch politics for many centuries.

More buildings were constructed around the court, several of which are well known in their own right, such as the Ridderzaal (Great hall; literally Knight's Hall), where the queen holds her annual speech at Prinsjesdag.

My favorite place for eating fish.

Way back home!!

Way Back Home follows Danny as he travels from Edinburgh to his home in Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, calling in at some incredible riding locations along the way including tourist hotspots like Edinburgh Castle and the Forth Bridge, as well as more off-the-beaten-track spots.

Wel even op HD zetten.

En ik maar denken, dat ik een beetje kon fietsen....

Even uitwaaien.....

Heerlijk gedouched en geslapen ( gek he? )

Zondagochtend zette ik om 07.45uur weer voet aan wal in Hoek van Holland.
